Carolina Outdoor Recreation & Education

CORE or Carolina Outdoor Recreation & Education is an outdoor experiential education program based in Morganton, NC. Its mission as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit is to empower youth through transformational outdoor experiences that cultivate a spirit of personal growth, adventure, stewardship, and leadership; equipping young people with the skills and confidence to lead future generations.

CORE supports students ages 6-18, and unlike many outdoor programs, aims to retain them through high school graduation. Founded recently in 2024 after splitting off from another local program, CORE provides year-round programming which includes activities such as technical rock climbing, mountaineering, backpacking, caving and white water canoeing.

Challenge and exploration lie at the heart of the growth experience for students in CORE. Those who push themselves to grow skills and develop leadership have an opportunity to attend the summer wilderness expedition. Summer expeditions change yearly and may look like backpacking in the Eastern Sierra, long canoeing expeditions in the Canadian Yukon and Northwest Territories, and other wild locations.
